Closing Out p4k Totally Clueless

As I was driving to Bottom Lounge last night to appear onstage with Eric Andre and the rest of Adult Swim’s The Eric Andre Show, much to my surprise, I couldn’t help but notice that Pitchfork was taking place at the corner of Ogden and Randolph (or thereabouts). There were tents, and there was loud music, so those were my first clues. Until then, I guess I was clueless, but based on the hipster nature of Pitchfork, I thought that it would be raging at a more “happening” place. I was thinking Oz Park, Rogers Park, you know, one of the parks. I definitely wasn’t thinking Union Park.

Actually, my first clue was a bunch of people dressed for a luau walking South on Ogden near Madison. That’s not something you see every day in that neck of the woods unless there’s a Jimmy Buffet or Kenny Chesney concert at United Center, and those guys tend to play outdoors. I was wondering what evil party bus driver had dropped them off in that barren part of town. Then… I saw the tents and heard the music.

In hindsight, I have put all of it together, and I feel that the people wearing the leis and flower print were there to see Beach House. I guess they were taking the concept literally. Ironically, I spent the weekend at my beach house in MI, but didn’t get to see the band named after the second homes and prime Malibu real estate at Pitchfork. According to his Twitter feed, my son, Matt did, however, and had a great time. I like beach house, and I like beach houses. As a matter of fact the girls in the leis on Ogden looked pretty inviting too. You can listen to Matt & Brendan every Thursday on The Steve Dahl Network.

I was doing a bit on Eric’s Show where he introduces me and then I come out on stage to the band playing. The band didn’t stop playing for the entire time that I am onstage though, and the interview is a train wreck (on purpose). At one point, Eric begins eating lettuce from a bag, so I asked him if he was a “fucking rabbit”, and then grabbed a handful myself. I’m not sure how the bit was received by the audience, because of the music playing the entire time, but I had fun.

Eric Tweeted on Monday that he thought it went great. I don’t know if there were any subscribers in the audience, or if I managed to convert anybody, but I did something outside of my comfort zone, and I also learned how to roll a blunt backstage before the show. Not from Eric or anybody on his staff, but some backstage hangers-on. The people from Adult Swim said they were taping the show, but not necessarily for air, so I don’t know if what we did will ever be seen. I also doubt that there will be a high retention rate on behalf of the Bottom Lounge crowd, since most, or all of them were pretty toasted from a day a p4k (note the hip way that I abbreviate Pitchfork). Thanks to Dino Stamatopoulis, also of the SDN and Sorry About Everything for hooking me up with Adult Swim too
