Cook County inmates competed in an online chess challenge against prisoners in Russia this week. Predictably, the Russians dominated. The U.S. felons did capture a respectable five out of nineteen matches, however. U.S.A.!!!

According to the Sun-Times, the contest was suggested by former world champion Anatoly Karpov. He toured the Cook County facilities last year and witnessed inmates engaged in a chess tournament.

Sheriff Tom Dart approved the idea, praising it as a low risk activity.

“What are you going to do, beat someone with a rook?” he added.

Prison has been on my mind of late. I’m not anticipating serving any time personally. (I wouldn’t survive one day.) Rather, I caught a portion of CNN’s “exclusive” with Bernie Madoff, who’ll be behind bars until he dies. Madoff apparently isn’t enjoying life in his medium-security world. I’d suggest he take up chess, but he’d probably just end up bilking the pawns out of their 401Ks.

Kai, the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker, looks like he’ll finally have a permanent home. The YouTube sensation and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” guest was arrested as a suspect in the murder of a New Jersey lawyer. A manhunt ensued for Kai and he was ultimately tracked down after being recognized at a Starbucks. Tazo SUH-MASH-ion Tea, perhaps? I don’t recommend the prison chess team for Kai, either. He doesn’t seem to have the necessary attention span. With his inclination to “smash, smash, SUH-MASH,” he’s better suited for volleyball or tetherball. Maybe Kai could spearhead a U.S. vs. Russia prisoner surf competition? At least our guys would be favored.
